The gameplay formula introduced in the original Zoo Tycoon in 2001 received updates throughout the series, but its theme and main motifs remain unchanged: Players must build, expand, and/or upgrade a zoo by purchasing animals, creating suitable animal habitats, and allocate staff and resources for animal maintenance and care. Zoo Tycoon is a zoo simulation video game putting the player in control of their own fictional zoo business. African Adventure is the first expansion to include live food.
Another new feature is more realistic herding and predator/prey behaviors. Zoo Tycoon 2: African Adventure also introduces other Jeep vehicles from the previous expansion, Endangered Species. It also adds several maps based on African locations, such as the Sahara desert, Atlas mountains and the drakensberg, among others. This expansion introduces 20 new animals, such as the meerkat and the pygmy hippo, and allows simple breeding between subspecies (the maasai and reticulated giraffe). Developed by Blue Fang Games, work for the game began in early 2005 for a May 2006 release.
